The Stroke Society of the Philippines was founded in 1995 with the mission of working together with
the government in reducing the morbidity and mortality of brain attack in the Philippines. The
Department of Health lists brain attack as a component of vascular diseases - as the number two
cause of death in the country today.
Experts in neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, radiology, hematology,
rehabilitation medicine, and critical care nursing provide the requisite expert knowledge in its
educational campaign.
The prime strategy in the pursuit of its mission is through education. Its main activity is linking
up with other professional groups in many symposia, lecture and other forum all over the country.
For this purpose, the Stroke Society has formed several teams of speakers who can be tapped at short
notice for educational campaigns.
It is partial in addressing its concerns to the general practitioners, who are at the forefront in
the care of the stroke victims at the critical few hours after an attack. An even greater concern
is to address the lay people who must recognize its earliest manifestations, so that they could bring
their afflicted loved ones to the nearest hospital knowledgeable and properly equipped to give the
acceptable standards of care for brain attack.
